Fellowship History

God created the world and made man in His own image and likeness; then the Lord God said “It is not good for the man to live alone. I will make a suitable companion to help him’’ (Genesis 2:18). Somewhere in Plateau State, two young Christians, David and Gyarta, had been observing marriages around them, facing challenges with some ending in divorce. This was a big burden in their hearts and they decided that when they get married, they will never live apart and will make their own marriage work with the help of God.

In 1981, after their marriage, Pastor and Mrs. David Pofi moved from Jos to Kaduna State where he was a student at the Polytechnic. There, they were welcomed into the home of an elderly Christian couple, Engineer and Mrs. Joseph Owosagba, now of the Endtime Rapture Ministries in Bauchi. He was a leader in Fellowship of Christian Students (FCS) at Kaduna Polytechnic and a member of Kaduna Christian Family Fellowship that had wonderful spouses who are now septuagenarians, octogenarians and nonagenarians – the younger ones being in their late 60s.

These men included Evangelist Matthew Owojaiye, who is the founder of Food for the Total Man Ministry and Chairman of Northern States Christian Elders Forum; Brother Afam Eruchalu of the Place of Refuge, Kaduna; immediate past Bishop of Anglican Diocese of Asaba, Bishop Justus Mogekwu; Major General Kayode Oni (rtd), Engineer Femi Adesesan, Engineer Nathaniel Akpaidu, Bro. Gbenga Alalade, Professor Amoni, Pastor Tim Anago, Captain Atureta (rtd), Dr. Isaac Amuta, Architect Ajayi Obinya, Architect Ugochukwu Agunwa, Engineer Eric Onyeiwu, Late Colonel Emenike Ezisi (rtd), Late Pastor Nwanjiobi,  Late Sam Morka. Engineer and Mrs. Joseph Owosagba introduced the Pofis into the Kaduna Christian Family Fellowship in 1981 that met every Monday by 7.00 pm to pray, study the bible and discuss openly about family matters in the homes of members.

The Pofis were spurred by the humility, simplicity, and the love shared in this fellowship. So, when they were posted to work in Maiduguri, Borno State from 1985 to 1988 they soon met Professor Bala Dauda, a lecturer at the University of Maiduguri, who had just returned to Nigeria from the United States of America after his studies to start a Couples’ Fellowship in Maiduguri in 1986, which expanded to three groups within two years.

In 1988, they were posted back to Jos. By January 1989 the Pofis wanted to start a couple’s fellowship in Jos, but mummy Pofi had an accident which halted their plan. After her recovery in 1990, at a program called “Mission to the Youth’’ at Lamingo, Jos the Pofis shared their vision with other Christian couples from Church of Christ in Nigeria (COCIN) Headquarters Jos namely, Elisha Choji, Haruna Dabin, Hope Galadima, Musa Hosea and Professor Shedrack Best. This gave birth to a Home Fellowship in the home of Pastor and Mrs. David and Gyarta Pofi with the inaugural Christian Couples Fellowship held on the 11th of January 1991. It had 31 committed couples as members.

As the Lord blessed the fellowship spiritually and physically, there was a need for the group to be split so, it was split into 3 groups. Presently in the Jos zone, there are 15 groups. Other zones include Mangu/Pankshin zone, Abuja zone, Kaduna zone, and Kano zone. The fellowship has expanded outside Nigeria. Rev. Kefas Tang’an left Nigeria on a mission to the United Kingdom, and he established the fellowship in the UK. While Mr. and Mrs. Olagbemiro left Jos and established the fellowship in Australia.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, the fellowship embraced the positive use of technology using Zoom and WhatsApp fellowships to the glory of God. The CCF is God’s project to make marriages of members work in Christ so that they can assist other couples handle their marital challenges in the way of the Lord.

The Fellowship is growing by the divine purposes of God and with great expectation to establish Fellowship of Christian Couples in Nigeria and even beyond. The Fellowship encourages that its members who move or relocate inter-city should endeavor to carry on the ministry and to prayerfully start a Couples Fellowship in consultation with the leadership of the Fellowship. In the full knowledge and realization of the vision, aims and objectives and the desire of the Fellowship that each couple who are members of the Fellowship live by word and deed in accordance with the Word of God in the Scriptures and the provisions of the Constitution of the Couples’ Fellowship.
